Why Pin Length Matters

Why Pin Length Matters

You might ask, why does pin length matter? We will give you a quick synopsis on the general rules of choosing the right pin brush for your dog. Shop all pin brushes here

The general rules for picking a pin brush

  1. The longer the coat, the longer the pin on the brush.
  2. The harder the coat, the firmer the pad.

Why Pin Length Matters, choosing the pin brush for short/medium coats

For short and medium coated breeds, you want a short/medium pin to match. Short/Medium Pins range from 16-22mm. These are good for most double coats as the length of the body coat is generally shorter. Short/Medium Pins are GREAT for wire coats. They are also good for the body of Poodles and some Scissored Coats. Finally, we recommend you only use a pin brush on Drop Coats for their shorter leg coat or sanitary area.

Long Pins for Long Coats

Long Pins range from 27-35mm. These are absolutely perfect and fantastic for Drop Coats! This is where a long pin pin brush really shines! Work through the coat, layer by layer and section by section. A long pin brush will be the most efficient for your Drop Coated breed.

Pad Firmness for Breezy Brushes

Pad Firmness: The curlier and denser the coat is, the firmer you want the pad. Chris Christensen Breezy Brushes are color coordinated for easy distinction.

  • Pink = Firm
    • Use a firm pad for denser coats like Bichons and Portuguese Water Dogs.
  • Green = Medium
    • Use a medium pad for coats like Pomeranians.
  • Purple = Soft
    • Use a soft pad for silky coats

Shape Differences for Pin Brushes

In the Chris Christensen line, there are 3 distinct shapes for our pin brushes. What do they all do?

  • Oval for large areas and large dogs. This is your workhorse!
  • Oblong great for styling! Use for straightening the coat or behind ears, toes, armpits.
  • Pocket size is great for small areas and small dogs or for junior handlers.
